Act 5 questions

HAMLET ACT 5: Questions

1) What do you feel is the point of the gravedigger’s riddles and song? How does it fit into the play?

To describe life and death. they're in a graveyard at a funeral.

2) In what ways do Hamlet’s reactions to the skulls in the graveyard seem to suggest a change in his outlook? Compare Hamlet’s attitude towards Yoric to Hamlet’s attitude to Ophelia or even his father? How is it different? How is it similar?

He's not as intense when he see's the skull of his old friend. He's kind of remembering the good times he has had, unlike Ophelia which is more of a regretful feeling and his father which is pure revenge.

3) How old is Hamlet? How do you know this?

30. the gravedigger started when old hamlet conquered old Fortinbras

4) What does the violent argument between Hamlet and Laertes add to the play?

It's the first time Hamlet has called himself the king and when they fight in the grave it is a sign that both of them will die.

5) What developments in Hamlet’s character are presented through the story of what happened on the boat? (V.ii 1-62). How has Hamlet changed?

He shows that when his trust is broken he will give no mercy. He is more mature once he appears in the graveyard.

6) How do Hamlet’s motives in killing Claudius seem to have shifted according to his speech beginning “Does it not, think thee…” (V.ii.63)

He feels that he should've been king before Claudius ever was king.

7) What concerns of the play are reinforced in the Osric episode? (V.ii.80-170)

The concern of losing the kiss ass character. To cure this they bring in Osric who is faithful to Hamlet now instead of Claudius.

8) Why does Hamlet ‘defy augury’? (V.ii.192)

To prove that he can actually do something with his life! Sadly the act would be losing his life.

9) What does Laertes say is his motive in still resenting Hamlet? How has already lost this? How does this contribute to the presentation of revenge in the play? (V.ii216-223)

To keep his reputation. By going to paris for fun. I'm pretty sure father killing followed by revenge is a theme in this book. Hamlet killed Laertes father, on "accident" while in a rage caused by Claudius who killed his father. Also Hamllet's father killed Fortinbras's father in battle.

10) How might the dying lines of Gertrude, Claudius and Laertes be viewed as typical of the way their characters have been presented throughout the play?

Gertrude dies from being poisoned and she says to Hamlet that he was the one person that was there that she cared about.
Claudius dies by the hand of Hamlet while crying out for help from people who have already done too much for him.
Laertes dies by the hand of Hamlet, apologizes to Hamlet, and accepts Hamlet's apology for killing his father.
11) Who “wins” in Hamlet? How and why do you think this?

Fortinbras. He becomes king without a war.

Hamlet speaks about love between old people. To be exact about his mother and Claudius. He believes that love, in general, is about sex and says that they are past that part of their lives. This just makes me believe that Hamlet doesn't actually believe in love. I don't think that Hamlet is crazy, I believe he is correct but frustrated with his mother's poor decisions.

10) Explain the differences between the ghost in Act I with the ghost in Act III. Why might these differences reflect Hamlet’s insanity?
The ghost in act I was seen by other people yet in this act Hamlet's mother cannot see the ghost that Hamlet sees. Also this ghost stays for a much shorter time and is now in search of resolution. In act 1 the ghost, kindly, requests vengeance.

Translation

to be or not to be that's what I'm questioning:
whether it's better  for the mind to suffer
the pains of terrible fortune
or to rebel against all of these troubles
and by rebelling end them.
to die is to sleep no more. and by sleep we mean end the terrible pains of life
that flesh is used to. THis is something I wish for. to die is to sleep; and maybe I'll dream, there's the upside.  What dreams might come from death. When we have shaken this mortal life. There's the bad thing about living so long. for who would want to go through the pain of life, god is wrong, he is contumely, the pain of love, the delay of the rules, the stupidity of the head of the country, and the pain that the unworthy goes through, when he could easily just kill himself with a knife? Who would want to go through such a weary life? But the fear of what happens after death, the afterlife, confuses the will, and makes us rather stay alive than kill ourselves? Our conscience makes us all afraid of death, and so resolution is portrayed as sick because we think. and because of this with great magnitude we regard our current state of mind and lose our chance to act. Because of you, fair Ophelia. Girl in my prayers  remember all of my sins.

Scene 4 opens with Hamlet, Horatio, and Marcellus walking around outside in the cold. They hear the canons firing and Hamlet says that even though it is a custom that he thinks it is stupid because it makes them seems drunk. They then see the ghost and Hamlet decides to follow it. The two decide to follow.
